From sodium-vapour to LEDs: how an outdoor lighting retrofit affects insects in Singapore

چکیده

Abstract In the Anthropocene, planet is warming and global biodiversity, including of insects, being lost at an unprecedented rate. One largely urban sustainability solution, shifting to energy-efficient, light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs on outdoor lighting, has impacts insects that are inadequately understood, especially in tropics brightly lit cities. Working Singapore—a highly urbanised light-polluted tropical city-state—we performed a field experiment test hypothesis newly retrofitted LED lights more attractive (i.e., detrimental) compared high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps they replace. Instead, our sticky traps, which we mounted both light types, caught statistically equal numbers arthropods (individuals families). Traps also attracted proportionally fewer dipterans hemipterans hymenopterans, but these effects were site-specific. Overall, found no support for hypothesis—our findings may reflect differential emissions ultraviolet wavelengths by types and/or possibility insect assemblages with historic exposure pollution not respond as expected retrofit. We caution against extrapolating from impact studies untested contexts highlight need (1) rapidly urbanising (2) tests effectiveness measures limit any negative ecological other lethal sublethal did assess. discuss possible implications ecosystem services conservation.

Comparison of real street lighting with sodium lamps and LEDs

The paper presents the comparison of luminous and electrical properties of modern LED-based luminaires with properties of the conventional luminaires with high pressure sodium lamp. It collects available product information of compared luminaires with measured luminous and electrical properties of them to allow a reader to take a view of mentioned luminaire properties. The most important values...

Simulating Performance Risk for Lighting Retrofit Decisions

In building retrofit projects, dynamic simulations are performed to simulate building performance. Uncertainty may negatively affect model calibration and predicted lighting energy savings, which increases the chance of default on performance-based contracts. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to develop a simulation-based method that can analyze lighting performance risk in lighting retrofit ...

Pico Power – Lighting Lives with Leds

In the past 5 years, high brightness LEDs have begun to penetrate the lighting market. High brightness LEDs are attractive due to their high efficiency, very low power consumption and very long lifespans. This paper describes experiences in using white LEDs for lighting rural households in developing countries. The Light Up The World Foundation (LUTW) is an aid organization that has formed part...

Refrigerated display case lighting with LEDs

The rapid development of high brightness light emitting diodes (LEDs) has triggered many applications, especially in the area of display lighting. This paper focuses on the application of white LEDs in refrigerated display cases. The fluorescent lighting presently used in commercial refrigerators is inefficient in the application and also it provides poor lighting for merchandising. A laborator...

On the vapour trail of an atmospheric imprint in insects.

Terrestrial arthropods, at constant risk from desiccation, are highly sensitive to atmospheric temperature and humidity. A physiological marker of these abiotic conditions could highlight phenotypic adaptations, indicate niche partitioning, and predict responses to climate change for a group representing three-quarters of the Earth's animal species. We show that the (18)O composition of insect ...
